A pumping package designed around the site

A package pump station may be required where foul water or sewage cannot drain to the receiving sewer by gravity. The correct system depends on expected inflow, storage, static head, rising-main losses, solids handling, electrical supply, access and the consequences of failure.

Early coordination matters. Chamber size, inlet level, discharge route, control location, covers, ventilation and commissioning requirements affect both the civils and the pumping equipment.

What the installation can include

  • Duty assessment and pump selection.
  • GRP chamber and valve-chamber specification.
  • Single or twin submersible pumps.
  • Guide rails, lifting chains, pedestals, valves and internal pipework.
  • Float switches or other level controls.
  • Control panel, alarms and electrical coordination.
  • Mechanical installation, operating tests and commissioning.
  • Handover information and maintenance recommendations.

Excavation, groundwater, concrete, lifting operations and electrical work require competent planning. Manufacturer instructions and the site-specific design always take precedence over general web guidance.

How the project progresses

  1. Site and duty review. Confirm incoming flows, levels, rising-main route, electrical supply and access.
  2. Coordinated specification. Select the pumps, storage, chamber, valves, controls and alarms as one working system.
  3. Civil preparation. Prepare the excavation, base, groundwater control, ducts and pipe connections to the approved design.
  4. Mechanical and electrical fit-out. Install the internal equipment, controls and safe lifting arrangements.
  5. Wet testing and commissioning. Check automatic operation, duty changeover, assist level and alarms before handover.

Anonymised Surrey-area example

Twin-pump package station installation

A new chamber was installed with two 230V sewage-rated pumps, two-inch pipework and valves, float switches and a control panel. Existing drains and the discharge pipe were connected, the redundant tank was infilled and spoil removed.

The installation record confirms that the work was completed to the agreed quotation. The project description remains anonymised pending approval for any named public case study or photographs.

Information needed for a useful quotation

  • Site plan, drainage drawing or clear sketch.
  • Proposed chamber location and access constraints.
  • Inlet and discharge levels where known.
  • Rising-main length, diameter and route.
  • Number and type of properties or fixtures served.
  • Available electrical supply.
  • Groundwater, traffic loading or other known site constraints.

Frequently asked questions

Can an existing pump station be replaced?

Yes, subject to a survey. The existing chamber, connections, electrical supply, access, storage requirement and temporary flow management all need review.

Are twin pumps always necessary?

No. The appropriate arrangement depends on duty, resilience and failure consequences. Twin pumps can provide duty/standby or assist operation where the design requires it.

Who completes the electrical connection?

Electrical work must be completed and certified by an appropriately qualified person as part of the agreed project responsibilities.
